Basics of Web Design - Part 2
Now, how do you get your site live up on the web?
Now that we understand what the web is, here’s a step by step tutorial about how to get your well coded pages live on the web.
- Domain Registration
- Hosting
- FTP what?
Domain Registration
Since we already went throught what domain registration is in the previous Basics of Web Design tutorial, now it’s time for you to actually register that domain name.
Registration is simple.
Since I am not getting paid to endorse any domain registrars, do a quick search for ‘domain registration’. Back so soon?! Nice to see you again! Now that you have looked at a few companies who can provide this service for you, don’t register that domain name just yet!
Because…
Hosting
If you did click around a bit on your registrars wite, you’ll notice that they want you to host with them. All you need is the basic package at this point. The price for hosting shouldn’t be much more than a few dollars per month.
Here’s why you held off.
It’s usually cheaper to get the domain name and hosting together. And less confusing too! Once you have that here’s the final, and possibly most confusing step.
FTP what?
You’ll need to connect to your new server via FTP (File Transfer protocol). To do this you need an FTP client. A great and very simple one is FileZilla. It’s free too!
Once you install the software on your computer, you will need to make a connection to a new site.
How do I do that? well, it depends on the Client you downloaded. Usually you can refer to the manual or faq of the software.
You will need three simple pieces of information: Host Name, User Name, Password. these you will neet to get from your hosting provider.
Once you connect to your site, you can then upload them to the root folder. Preview your new site in your web browser!
